Dogs and Goals

I have two things to pitch you on before we start this issue.

First, yesterday was our biggest promotional day for Content Entrepreneur Expo (CEX) 2025. If you are involved in digital content creation, this is your event. And we included all that “figure out how to use AI stuff” as well.

Save $200 on regular or all-access passes by using the code CEXDAY when you register here. I’ll be hosting AND presenting twice (one on Burn the Playbook and one on publishing a book).

CEX 2025 is August 24-26 at the Cleveland Convention Center. It’s a small gathering (about 300 or so) of incredible people.

And…

Second, my new book, Burn the Playbook, is NOW AVAILABLE for pre-order here.

Anyone who pre-orders a print copy will get:

  • Burn the Playbook Startup Guide
(11 Business Actions to Take Before Starting a Content Business)
  • Burn the Playbook 21-Day Challenge
(Takes the book’s concepts and kicks you in the butt to get started)
  • Your “Build What Matters” Checklist
(You do even half of these things and you will be an incredible success)
  • The “Taking the Leap” Worksheet
(Thinking about leaving the rat race? Here’s the worksheet you need.)
  • Every order includes an ebook/PDF of Burn the Playbook

I wrote this book specifically for my kids. If you know a recent graduate, are an entrepreneur/creator, or you are in a job that just doesn’t satisfy you, Burn the Playbook is for you.

I believe that success today starts and ends with how we think. This is the book I wish I had when I just left college and needed some direction. I truly believe it will help people.

The Persistence of a Dog

I have never been a dog person. I've never had a dog as a pet and generally do not enjoy the company of dogs.

This week Molly (pictured above) came back to our house for an extended visit and we've again become fast friends.

Here are the 10 life lessons I've learned from Molly.

1. Make time for play.
(There is always time to play catch.)

2. Be present. Enjoy the things right in front of you.
(This grass is so wonderful. I'm going to roll around in the grass for the next 30 minutes. It feels wonderful.)

3. Take joy in the small things.
(OMG we are going outside. This is the best day ever. Wow. Food. Even though it is the same food I've eaten for the past five years, this food is the most amazing thing I've ever had. I am blessed.)

4. Forget the past.
(I know I just ran full steam into that wall. It hurt a little, but what's done is done. Please throw me the ball again.)

5. Love BIG and unconditionally.
(Yes, you keep leaving me and going into your office, but I love you more than ever. I will wait outside your door for an hour or longer if that's what it takes.)

6. Try new things.
(OMG, I've never been in the backyard, but it sounds absolutely fabulous. Let's try that. Oh, the car door is open. Let's go for a ride. I don't care where we go, but let's have an adventure.)

7. Forgive.
(You forgot to take me out and I peed on the floor. But I forgive you. You seem very distracted and busy. I'm sure you won't let that happen again.)

8. Get outside often.
(Well yes, it is 90 degrees with 100 percent humidity, but we are outside and it is truly amazing. Let's stay outside as long as possible. I will roll around for a while and then smell everything again and again.)

9. Stop looking at screens.
(I know you are watching something on the television, but I am going to look at you for the next two hours without blinking because that's how much I love you.)

10. Persistence above all things.
(You keep sitting there and ignoring me, but if I keep dropping the ball in front of you over and over and over and over again, at some point you are going to play with me.)

Thank you Molly!

Double Your Income in One Year

I've been a huge fan of Brian Tracy since I first started to listening to his tapes in the late 90s. The TLDR from Brian is that you are what you think about.

In this video, Brian talks about how you can quickly double your income.

Brian says to do this:

Take a notebook (actual paper) and write down 10 goals you’d like to accomplish in the next 12 months.

Write them in the present tense as though they're already a reality. Not “I will earn” but “I earn” or “I weigh.” Include a due date for each goal. “I earn this amount by...” for example.

When you write it down, pen to paper, you engage in what Brian calls psycho neural motor activity. This means that you “see it” when you’re writing it. And by doing the handwriting, you actually program it into the hard drive of your subconscious mind.

Review the goals daily.

That’s it. That’s the exercise.

If you do this for 12 months, you will accomplish six or seven or eight of these goals and your life will be so incredibly different than it was.

Believe me…this works.

And, funny enough, this is the difference between those who accomplish goals and those who do not. Those who accomplish their goals already know they are going to attain them. They write it down like it’s already a fact and, subconsciously, it is.

I’d be curious if you use this kind of strategy and how it’s worked for you (email me and let me know).

And finally…

I know a few people in my life who inherently have a bad attitude about most things. It is very hard for them to accomplish anything because they do not believe they can do anything of substance for themselves.

For those people, maybe re-frame your thinking into “I have nothing to lose.”

Having a “nothing to lose” attitude may give you that additional edge, which could make all the difference.

Good luck and keep me posted.
